Gulf Expatriates: Sabera Begum stuck up in Abu Dhabi, appeals to foreign minister Sushma Swaraj for help in repatriation to India

Hyderabad: Amjed Ullah Khan, Leader and Spokesman of Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) – a breakaway group of Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM – has been at the forefront in rescuing several Muslim women stranded in Middle East countries facing sexual exploitation and slavery by their employers on the pretext of household jobs. Mr. Khan has been even successful in couple of cases through the prompt and effective intervention of Union Foreign Minister Ms. Sushma Swaraj. Khan’s efforts have been lauded and prominently covered in many newspapers and magazines published from Hyderabad.

IMG-20170817-WA0077Taking up yet another case of a helpless Hyderabad-based Muslim woman Mrs. Sabera Begun stranded in Abu Dhabi and living in pathetic condition, MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan has recently written to foreign minister Ms. Sushma Swaraj seeking her help in repatriation of Mrs. Sabera Begum to India, whose current status is now that of a ‘Stateless’ person.

Telangana Govt letter to MEAMr. Khan in his letter to Ms. Sushma Swaraj wrote: “This is to state that Mrs. Sabera Begun, a resident of 18-11-80/53 Salala Barks, Hyderabad, Telangana State, was married to Abdul Aziz Abdul Rasheed Khalifa Mohammed Al Balochi on 28th January 1983 in Hyderabad. She travelled to Abu Dhabi, UAE, on Indian Passport Number U330461. She has six daughter and two sons with the above said Shaikh. The said Shaikh got her UAE citizenship and she got her UAE Passport Number A1654289 on 8th July 2006. She travelled to India on UAE passport up to 2011. The said Shaikh divorced her and cancelled her UAE passport, and she became Stateless person. As there was no one to look after her she wanted to return to India. She applied for renewal of her Indian Passport with Indian Embassy in UAE vide file Number ABU/CON/432/4/2012.The Indian Embassy in UAE called for a preliminary report from Ministry for Home Affairs Govt of India vide letter No: 26014/20/2012 Dated IC II Dated 27th Dec 2012.The MHA without any local inquiry sent a report on 18th May 2016 saying, “She has not been granted Indian Citizenship and No case for considering citizenship under 5(I)(B) of Indian Citizenship Act 1955 is pending. ” As per Citizenship Act Sec 5 “if He or She is a Citizen of India by Birth or His or Her parents are citizens of India He or she stands to be a Citizen of India. Her brother Peer Mohammed approached to Under Secretary to Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India and was asked to submit a fresh application under Sec 5 (I) (F) of the Citizenship Act. He applied the same vide Letter No: 26014/0020/2012 on 4th July 2017. As she is suffering from mental illness and other diseases and she wants to return to India she has requested me to take up her case with you. Hence it is requested to take necessary steps to repatriate Mrs. Sabera Begum from Abu Dhabi to India as soon as possible. “
