Islam: What is the meaning and purpose of our life?

By Dr. Abdul Ruff Colachal

Humans are born and then we live according to our wish and will. Here “our wish” is most important for us. God has no role in their lives. In fact God is nobody for most humans.

What is the meaning of our life? What is the purpose of our life? Do we understand the concepts like ‘meaning of life’ and ‘purpose of life’?

Getting good education, making money and enjoying life etc attract us and we try it and most of us succeed in implementing the scheme. Many of us are known or important persons.

Is that all enough for to claim or say that we have pursued the meaning and purpose of life?

Wealth creation and wealth growth are the prime target of human societies and every human being. But human being attains humane quality only when we think beyond money, wealth.

In fact, most of us do a lot of things without even knowing the meaning and purpose of life and that is due mainly to the truth that our parents did not give us good thoughts about these two very vital and most important aspects of life.

Are we entitled to use our hands, legs, mind, eyes, etc according to our wishes?

Do we know all our parts of body are meant to serve the Almighty?

Do we give God enough space in us to work on and with us?

Can we use our hands to perform functions not meant for God and not endorsed by God?

Islam25Shall we beat others, insult, injure, lynch or kill others?

Sins are common and very attractive for everybody to commit them without worry.

We should no make our hearts, minds and thoughts a closed cave of criminals, frauds and robbers. This would be possible only if we are sincere and able to instill strong faith and spiritual feelings in them.

Sins and prayers cannot go hand in hand.

God has better plans for the believers to ensure safe life here and hereafter.

Religious approach to problems we face would be further straightened if our thoughts go spiritual. However, that is not easy.

Spiritual molding of life takes care of purpose of life towards a high goal.

Generally, humans are either believers or non believers. Those who do not trust God are more than those who really trust God.

There are plenty of hypocrites who pretend to be believers. They only use religion for personal profits.

Those who really believe in God – trust Him, His power and the life Hereafter – would also fear God’s wrath for sins committed sincerely and refuse commit sins, and wrong doings like thefts, cheating or crimes. Those who really trust and fear God live according the God’s rules.would refuse to tell lies, cheat others, commit crimes against others, knowingly and willingly. They would certainly fear that God would punish them, now or later. God decides the time to act. For example those who commit crimes, oppression against some weak persons because of the huge power they wield and enjoy, God would wait to take action against his circles.

Whether or not mere repentance would be enough for obtaining pardon of the God Lord depends on the nature and seriousness of crimes committed and how much the targeted persons suffer due to his deliberate foolishness.

Our lives would be meaningful only if we are accountable for our actions, and commit ourselves to the will of God. And we will realize the will and wish of God only if we consciously imbibe the virtues of true faith. Here our wealth or money would not come to our help but only hinder the process of moving sincerely on God’s path.

Islam124jpgFearless life in spiritual sense is hypocritical, mischievous, confusing and misleading. Not fearing God’s punishment is a non serious way of believing God Almighty.

Meaning and purpose of our life are verily interlinked.

Once we know the meaning of life we would also know the purpose of it. We would realize both only if we move away from the routine materialist way of thinking towards spirituality.

At times spiritual attitude, deep thinking of and attachment with God would make our own religions even irrelevant as we reach a saturation point in religious domains where we may decide that religions are not essential and pose problems to people and God alone would be sufficient.

In fact, that is the role of any true religion – bringing the believers closer to God Almighty.

Spiritually speaking, eating, drinking and enjoying life as we please depending on the resources we have is not the whole meaning and purpose of our little life. That life ends once we lose our health or resources.
